Mathematics faculties used to be half-empty a few years ago. It was seen as a discipline for geeky misfits who would mostly fit in as high school teachers. No longer so: now cut-off grades are almost impossible and mathematicians get elite jobs before the end of the first year. They are the guardians of the algorithm.
